• Presence at LON2: We have also established connectivity at LINX’s secondary London peering LAN (LON2), ensuring redundancy and improved network resilience.
• Peering: Our network is now actively peering with over 600 different networks, including major ISPs, content providers, and cloud platforms.

1. Proactive monitoring & visibility across our stack

Network Infrastructure

• All devices, including core routers, switches and edge nodes, are monitored 24/7 in real time using a range of telemetry and protocols.
• We collect interface statistics, CPU/memory utilisation, packet loss, BGP session health, and route flaps.
• Round-trip latency and jitter are tracked continuously across key routes, including transit and peering paths.

Hardware & Environmental

• Power consumption per rack & individual device in the data centre
• Facility environment monitoring (inlet temperature for each server, ambient hot-aisle temperatures, ambient cold-aisle temperatures, humidity across the points in the facility)
• Individual server monitoring (exhaust temperature for each server, CPU temperatures, inlet temperature for each server, fan speeds, power supply & voltage status, storage disks status & SMART metrics, the chassis overall health and much more)
• PDUs, UPS systems, and cross-connects are also monitored for load, failover state, and environmental thresholds.

Services & Application Uptime

• HTTP(S), DNS, SMTP, and other services are externally monitored across geographically distributed nodes utilising a variety of methods
• Synthetic checks simulate actual activity — not just pinging servers but validating full-stack functionality.

All of this data feeds into our centralised internal observability stack which encompasses a combination of internal and external tooling and monitoring sources.

2. Smart alerting and event prioritisation

Not every spike or event needs to wake up an on-call engineer at 3am on a Sunday. We use multi-tiered alerting that balances urgency, context, and impact:

• Critical Alerts trigger immediately if a network device (such as core router or switch) goes down, rising data centre temperatures, security alert/abnormality or a cluster health check fails. These alert the on-call engineer as soon as the anomaly has been observed.
• Warning Alerts are used for abnormal trends — BGP session drops, packet loss on a host or hypervisor, high CPU utilisation
• Informational Events are logged but don’t trigger alarms — for example, BGP prefix changes or flap detection.

All alerts are managed as follows:

• Escalation policies based on service type, customer impact, and severity
• Custom alert routing (e.g., networking alerts go to the NOC, security alerts go to our SOC, colocation hardware alerts go to on-site staff)
• Automatic alert de-duplication and silencing during planned maintenance windows

We also provide relevant alerting/visibility to key customers through ticketing and dashboard portals.

3. Automation & Self-Healing

Some issues shouldn’t need human intervention at all — and at FyfeWeb, many don’t.

Examples of automated actions we perform:

• Loss of Upstream Connectivity
  If one of our upstream providers starts dropping packets or increases latency, we automatically reroute traffic to alternate paths or upstream providers.
• Remote Power Cycling via IPMI or PDUs
  If a server becomes unreachable or fails health checks, we can script a graceful reboot or hard power cycle — no human intervention required.
• Anomaly Detection and Rate Limiting
  Sudden spikes in traffic are analysed in real-time. If they match known DDoS signatures or attack vectors, we can engage rate limiting, bot protection and/or upstream scrubbing and filtering in less than 1 second.

4. Regular testing and failover drills

Uptime isn't just about reacting to problems — it's about preparing for them. We perform:

• Quarterly failover tests between transit providers (i.e. withdrawing an upstream provider from service to simulate a failure)
• Power redundancy tests for our UPS', generators and A+B feed failure scenarios in our colocation racks
• Simulated NOC responses to ensure engineers can resolve priority-1 alerts within SLA

We even test alert fatigue by injecting false positives occasionally to validate our escalation workflows, ticket generation, and team readiness.

Step 1: Initial Consultation and Planning

Every colocation customer is different. Whether you're housing a single 1U server, deploying a full rack with dual-power feeds and or multi-rack footprints with private networking, we begin with a discovery conversation to understand:

• Power requirements (A+B feeds, total kW draw)
• Rack space (1U, 2U, half rack, full rack, multi-rack etc.)
• Connectivity (IP transit, private VLANs, cross connects etc)
• Remote hands expectations
• Security and compliance considerations

From there, we assign you a suitable location in one of our racks or cages, configure the required PDUs and patching, and allocate your IP space and ASN-related resources (where applicable).

Step 2: IP Allocation and BGP Setup (if needed)

Once your order is confirmed, we allocate:

• IPv4 and/or IPv6 address space
• VLAN(s) for public and/or private connectivity
• BGP session(s) if you’re announcing your own prefixes via your ASN

If you’re multihomed or want to peer directly with AS212396, we’ll provision a BGP session with appropriate filters and communities. You’ll receive full technical documentation including LOAs, IPs, and upstream policy information.

Step 3: Delivery or On-Site Installation

You have two options for getting your hardware into our racks:

Option A: Ship to Us

Send your equipment to our data centre with a pre-approved delivery window. We can:

• Unbox and visually inspect the equipment
• Rack equipment securely
• Connect power and data/fibre
• Provide photos of the completed installation
• Power it up and monitor for POST or connectivity issues

Option B: On-site visit & installation

If you prefer to install the kit yourself:

• We’ll coordinate a site access window with the DC security team
• You’ll receive a temporary access pass and escorted access

Step 4: Power-Up and Connectivity Testing

Once the hardware is in place, we proceed to:

• Apply correct PDU assignments (A+B or single-feed as agreed)
• Confirm power draw and environmental metrics
• Test network uplinks, VLAN tagging, and BGP sessions
• Verify MAC registration (if needed) and any Layer 2 transport

We run diagnostics to confirm that your equipment is online, reachable, and correctly routed.

Step 5: Handover and Ongoing Support

What is CloudLinux OS?

CloudLinux OS is a specialist operating system which has been specifically designed for website hosting. Specifically tailored to the needs of web hosting providers like ourselves.

CloudLinux comes with a wide range of features, including:

• LVE: LVE is a kernel-level technology developed by CloudLinux . It integrates at the server and database levels, among others, to prevent any kind of abuse while maintaining the lowest overhead possible. The technology has roots in common with container-based virtualisation. The goal of LVE is to ensure that no single website can bring down your server.
• CageFS: Using CageFS, a virtualised file system, limits each account and website to its own 'caged' area. This further enforces separation between users, websites and accounts already imposed by CloudLinux
• Hardened Kernel: CloudLinux OS provides a kernel that is specifically designed and hardened to protect against common types of vulnerabilities and exploits. This enhances server security further.

For over 10 years, FyfeWeb has been providing industry-leading web hosting services. However, over the last few years, we've been pushing our data centre colocation services and dedicated server hosting solutions. This, coupled with our relentless focus on the customer experience we deliver, has enabled us to build our own BGP-enabled network - spanning 8 data centres across the UK.

More recently, we've decided to join the LONAP internet exchange in London - giving us greater control over where traffic goes between our network and other ISPs and networks. Furthermore, because we're peering directly with these other providers, latency is reduced. Essentially, LONAP members can keep traffic local by exchanging it closer to its source or destination. This also means that the time a data packet takes to reach its destination is minimised, therefore improving connectivity even further.

Presently, we're peering and directly exchanging traffic on our network with over 260 other providers, or peers. Some of these include Vodafone, Sky, CloudFlare, Zen Internet and more. As time goes on, we hope to add even more peers by joining other internet exchanges.

Since we started offering web hosting services back in 2014, we've always believed in maintaining as much control over our operations as possible, and this included running our own hardware in trusted and highly-secured data centres around the UK. Over the years, as our requirements grew, we quickly expanded our rack footprint in many different facilities nationwide to ensure continuity, performance, and some geographical separation between locations, and different services. In the process, we decided it would be feasible for us to build our own network too - ultimately to ensure a standardised approach to each of the facilities we were in.

Each data centre we're present in connects back to our data centre sites in London Docklands, Equinix LD8, and Telehouse East, via diverse private fibre optic wavelengths - at a minimum of 10Gbps.

After building our network, and including services such as DDoS mitigation and high-capacity dedicated bandwidth as standard (which some providers charge extra for) we decided that alongside our dedicated server offerings, a colocation service would compliment our service portfolio and develop our overall strategy. This would essentially allow customers to place their own hardware in any of our data centre facilities and benefit from the highly-available power, cooling, and network connectivity we had on our own server hosting hardware.

When it comes to data centre colocation, we take a flexible approach. For example, many options for bandwidth, power, and rack space are available. Further to this, we don't just leave you to it once the contract is signed, like most other providers do - we actively help you get the most out of your service - and are always available to provide support where necessary.

If you colocate your servers with FyfeWeb, we can rack your servers for no extra cost, and include a generous allowance of remote hands with the service - this means that we're able to install the OS on your server, perform system setup and get everything ready for you. This is something you'd typically need an IT department for, but it's something we just include out of the box. All you need to do is send your server to one of our data centre sites once we've confirmed the order with you - and we'll handle the rest.

With this in mind, Quality is something which is always at the forefront of any decision made by the company or our people.  Our expectations for quality are incredibly high and this is something which is not going to change. Even though we have not updated our blog in a short while, we have still been working hard on a number of tasks and projects over the past few months which have and will continue to allow us to continually develop, expand and evolve the business.

Firstly, we have worked hard on keeping a higher level of bare-metal infrastructure in stock, which are ready for purchase and use by customers. This includes our high-performance, Tier 1 vendor bare-metal servers. All infrastructure and services provided by FyfeWeb is privately owned and operated in ISO compliant (27001/9001 etc.) & accredited data centres. (To learn more about our security, please visit our Security Resources Page). All our services are connected to our uncontended, DDoS protected and multi-homed 20Gbps+ core network. This provides an ultra-fast, low latency experience for anyone accessing or using the services you have with us, no matter where in the world they are located.

Secondly, we have introduced some further changes to our network. This includes introducing additional layers of resilience and forms of failover to provide a greater level of resilience and availability and an increase in capacity. We and our partners have expanded the number of transit providers we use. These now include: Arelion (formerly Telia Carrier), Lumen (Level 3/CenturyLink), NTT, Hurricane Electric, Zayo & T-Mobile US (Sprint).

Finally, I have been doing some work with respect to developing further our commitment to doing the right thing and evolving our industry-leading Legal, Privacy & Trust initiative. The work being undertaken relates to becoming compliant and accredited with a variety of internationally- and nationally-recognised standards. We will of course provide updates as and when available, but overall we have made great progress on these so far. We will have have more updates for you regarding this by Q4 2022.

We've always said, every customer is important - from clients that have a shared web hosting account costing a few pounds per month, to a multi-thousand pound data centre services customer - everyone receives our world renowned support experience.

We take privacy, service availability and security incredibly seriously, which is why it is incorporated into every aspect of our business. We have a dedicated page which details some of the security mechanisms and methods we have in place, but I thought that I'd take the time to go indepth to outline how we secure our customers and their data a bit further.

1. Employee vetting and background checks

Before someone joins our staff, FyfeWeb verifies their education and previous employment, and performs internal and external reference checks. Where applicable laws or statutory regulations permit, FyfeWeb may also conduct identity, criminal, and credit checks and confirm immigration status, depending on the position.

2. Security awareness training

All FyfeWeb employees, including contractors and anyone else who works with us, undergo regular security awareness training as part of the induction process, and as part of their continued development throughout their time at FyfeWeb. During the induction phase, new employees also agree to our ​Code of Conduct​, which highlights our commitment to keeping customer information safe and secure.  

Depending on their role, employees participate in additional training which is tailored or covers aspects of security which is relevant for their role. For example, the information security team instructs contractors on topics like secure coding practices, product design and automated vulnerability testing tools. Engineers also attend technical presentations on security-related topics and receive a regular security and vulnerability threat intelligence bulletins and newsletters from a large range of sources that covers new threats, attack patterns, mitigation techniques and more.

3. Secure operating environment and adequate auditing

International data protection regulations place significant emphasis on businesses knowing how they process data, who has access to data, and how security incidents will be managed. We have a team of engineers and compliance professionals who support customers in navigating their own regulatory compliance and risk management obligations. Our approach includes collaborating with customers to understand and address their specific needs. As new auditing standards are created, our team works to determine what controls, processes and systems are needed to meet them, while facilitating and supporting independent audits and assessments by third parties. In certain situations or circumstances, we also allow customers to conduct audits to validate our security and compliance controls.

FyfeWeb has a "zero-trust" approach when it comes to networks and devices located on them. We enforce significant access controls based on information about a network, a device, its state, its associated user or company, location and more. This considers all networks, including internal and external, to be untrustworthy. This creates a concept of borderless compliance where we dynamically assert and enforce levels of access at the application layer. This enables FyfeWeb's security and compliance team to be as secure and effective during an emergency as they would be at any other time.

4. Engaging with staff and the wider security and privacy community

Security and privacy is an ever-evolving topic and FyfeWeb recognises that regular outreach with our partners, appropriate communities in the industry as well as other parties forms a key aspect of raising awareness. This includes outlining best practices staff should adhere to and habits & behaviours that they should avoid or refrain from doing. We truly believe that collaboration between companies and industry communities can be a factor which drives innovation and development.

5. Security Operations Centre

We employ a team of passionate and dedicated security and privacy professionals who form part of our Security Operations Centre (or "SOC"). Our Security Operations Centre is tasked with maintaining our defences, developing our security processes & procedures, implementing our security policies and proactively/reactively scanning for threats.

The Security Operations Centre are also responsible for the day-to-day and long term oversight, responsibility and management of our information security, cyber security, physical security, penetration testing, quality assurance (QA) and system, application and network security.

6. Privacy Operations

Privacy is a fundamental right and your privacy is important to us. We are committed to protecting our user's information whilst empowering them to reach their full potential. As such, we have developed an inter-departmental and cross-functional team, called the "Privacy Directorate" which enables us to monitor and remain up to date with current issues, legislation, regulation, events, judgements & more and ultimately being able to hold ourselves accountable to ensure the proper use and protection of personal information that we process.

7. Data Centres

In order for FyfeWeb, or any business in our industry in-fact, to maintain any form of security over the information we process, is to ensure that the we use data centres which are secure, controlled and accreditied. Since the outset, we have worked with providers and internal members alike to ensure our data centres feature a "multi-layered security model" which encompasses granular levels of access control, to ensure access is granted on a "need to" or bona fide basis only and access is removed for anyone who does not require access to a specific level (or "layer").

We pride ourselves on the fact of that the closer you get to the data center floor, the tighter the security measures become -- a very limited number of people have clearance to even enter the data centre campuses we use, nevermind data centre buildings, data floors or individual racks.

In addition to our multi-layered approach to physical security, our data centres are equipped with video surveillance cameras (CCTV), automatic numberplate recognition (ANPR) cameras, granular methods of access control at all levels, biometrics, perimeter fencing and individual data floor and individual rack levels of access. Those that do have a bona fide reason to access our data centres, are pre-approved and access the data centres the only way possible; through security access corridors which implement multi-factor access control using security badges, government issued identification checks, access clearance checks and biometrics.

8. Renewable energy sources

We are passionate about reducing the impact we have on the environment wherever we can and where it is possible we use renewable energy sources to power the data centres we use. Our data centre providers work to reduce waste by ensuring that data centres are designed to reduce unnecessary waste.

9. Hardware & Software

We pride ourselves on only using hardware from Tier 1 hardware providers, such as Juniper Networks, Dell EMC and HPE. This means that our equipment features energy efficiency advantages, equipment's feature-set is secure by design and much more.

10. Asset Management & Disposal

We employ a rigorous asset management and disposal system. We use a variety of asset tags and barcodes to closely track the location, status and more of all inventory assets used by the company, whether this be in our data centres, our office areas or our remote workers, from acquisition and delivery, installation, usage, retirement and destruction. We have in place a strict chain of custody system which ensures that no equipment leaves a data centre, or anywhere else it is authorised to be, without the appropriate clearance or authorisation. Our strict disposal procedure is adhered to at all times and any anomalies or variations are investigated without delay and are addressed immediately.

When a disk drive is retired, authorised personnel verify a given disk has been properly erased in compliance with the "DoD 5220.22-M" standard which requires:

- Pass 1: Overwrite all addressable locations with binary zeroes

- Pass 2: Overwrite all addressable locations with binary ones

- Pass 3: Overwrite all addressable locations with a random bit pattern

- Final Pass: Confirmation of data deletion and drive wipe

From this point, drives are either: (a) stored in our secure storage locations awaiting re-use, deployment or acquisition; or (b) they are destroyed using a range of methods, ensuring that all data bearing equipment is destroyed to a point where no data can be recovered.

As a business, we're always out to improve our infrastructure - and over the last few weeks, we've been "bring it back to the web" so to speak. This month, we’ve invested over £5k in our new shared web hosting infrastructure, with 10Gbps uplinks to our core network, hosts with 10x SSDs in RAID10, and new dedicated racks, specifically for web hosting services. We’re truly committed to our clients, always re-investing and improving our services and infrastructure.

The new servers feature 48 CPU cores, at least 256GB high-performance DDR4 memory, in order to handle in excess of 20,000 concurrent requests per second per node. Obviously, this will vary on the types of websites hosted on each server, which is why we monitor every machine closely - and never oversell, as this is shared hosting after all. When designing the platform, we wanted to make shared hosting feel like dedicated hosting. It's no secret that we've been able to achieve this in the past with the use of the CloudLinux Operating System and LVE, essentially separating each cPanel account into its own "container" (like a Virtual Machine or Docker in a certain sense) - but we wanted to go further, so we've upgraded the limits on each account to offer 2x the performance compared to before.

Whatsmore, we wanted to design the new platform to be more appetising to our already successful reseller hosting service. So, we invested in a new domain "websiteserver.uk" in order to provide this functionality. In due course, we will be revealing our new web hosting plans (for both standard consumers and resellers) so keep your eyes peeled on the FyfeWeb Portal.

Further to this, we've upgraded to new versions of CloudLinux, MySQL/MariaDB, and JetBackup - to further increase performance across the platform. We've already noticed major improvements in page responsiveness since improving the web hosting infrastructure - and Plesk fans - do not worry. Major upgrades are coming to that hosting platform too! At the end of the day, since founding the business, my goal has always been to improve services for every single person who may utilise them, from the administrator to the end-user website visitor.

Since the inception of FyfeWeb as a leading hosting provider, we have always thought about ways in which we can provide the most reliable services available on the market. It's in our DNA - something that we always focus on. That's why we've been working hard on this project since March 2021 to further enhance the reliability of our network and internet facing edge. As an Internet Service Provider (AS212396) we work with many other leading NSPs and ISPs in order to build the most reliable network we can.

Today, we are announcing that we have partnered with a new DDoS protection provider which enables us to enhance our DDoS mitigation services across our entire network. Previously when working with Voxility & others to deliver clean inbound dedicated customer connectivity, to web hosting, virtualised cloud, private cloud (dedicated servers) and data centre colocation, at a capacity of 1Tbps+. Now, we have achieved an even larger DDoS filtering capacity on our network edge, more than tenfold.

The new DDoS protection provider has deployed one of the largest Layers 3 through 7 monitoring and mitigation platforms out there. Combining a global anycast network with the power of Stateful Mitigation, the DDoS protection provider has become the new industry standard in DDoS protection services. Their advanced security AI detects and mitigates any type of DDoS attack against any type of service. This advanced technology tracks previously known DDoS attack vectors while simultaneously constructing your service’s unique traffic signatures to instantly identify and mitigate zero day attacks.

We've worked closely with VeloxServ Communications, one of our data centre partners, to obtain a cross connect at our Equinix LD8 Point of Presence. This has enabled us to directly connect our entire network edge to DDoS protection provider's core network in this London data centre, allowing all of our customers to benefit from this layer of protection no matter where they are on our network. By ruling out points of failure that could occur along the way, we greatly increase the resilience, reliability and availability of our network. For example, radio stations on-net with us streaming to thousands of listeners on the internet, any drops would create a detrimental impact. This is something we work tirelessly to prevent, and our connectivity service level agreements reiterate this.

Here at FyfeWeb, we've never stopped innovating since day one. We've invested significantly into our infrastructure in order to build some of the most reliable and high-performance hosting services in the UK. This is something we'll never stop doing; constantly improving and evolving in this industry is crucial, and is at the centre of everything we do.

As you may know, we take great pride in providing secure, private and scalable customer-centric cloud and hosting services we'd want to use ourselves. The experience our customer's receive, is fundamentally important in so many ways.

Although we have regular conversations and interactions with a small subset of customers on a regular basis, to discuss issues they face and any suggestions or feedback they'd like to propose, until now we have not invited our entire customer-base* to take part in a short survey, providing them with a platform to rate our overall performance, rate the experience they've had with us and to voice any other thoughts, feedback or suggestions which they may possess.

Methodically listening to what our customers would like to say or what they would like to see from us is pivotal to the progression, growth and development of the company and development of the relationship we have with them. This allows us to see things from our customer's perspective and to improve or remediate anything we may have overlooked or missed. We can only improve, adapt and progress with the help, support and input of our customers and users.

Since the inception of FyfeWeb as a hosting provider, there's always been a very important aspect of the business - privately owned hardware and software located in data centres we know and trust and over the years. We have formed long-lasting relationships with various data centre partners; providing us with extensive colocation services across the UK. With this framework in mind, it was imperative that we could establish high-performance, secure and reliable network connectivity between data centres.

In order to faciliate this goal, we ensure each data centre is connected to our network (AS212396) at a minimum of 10Gbps - utilising IP transit with some of the largest ISPs and carriers (e.g NTT, Telia Carrier etc) in order to reduce latency in other countries and to provide a consistent and exceedingly-high level of service.

One key advantage of operating your own infrastructure is that you're able to physically have full end-to-end control over your servers, network and operating environment. Although initially more expensive, it works out more cost effective in the long run - since you're able to operate high-performance hardware for a fraction of the monthly cost. Once we fully realised the benefits of this, and after building our high-performance VPS hosting solution, we began to offer a range of dedicated servers and data centre colocation services. These were built on the proven reliability of the FyfeWeb Core Network and data centre environment. This allows clients to take advantage of all features offered within the data centre, for a fraction of the cost. Since we had the environment in place already, it was fairly straight forward for us to start offering these additional high-specification services.
